Abstract: The influence of the amount of the retained austenite,the hardness,and the heat treatment method on the fatigue crack propagation and the fatigue life of cold working die steel Cr12MoV was studied.The experimental results showed that under laboratory conditions the cycle-index of fatigue crack initiation was growing and the cycle-index of the fatigue crack propagation was decreasing with the increase of the hardness of the speccmens,which was agreeable with that of structural steels.But when the specimens were treated for the secondary hardening fatigue life was improved obviously and much longer than those treated for the first hardening.In these specimens a large amount of retained austenite presented after quenching and tempering,and so the fatigue life was reduced and the value m was increased remarkably.
