Abstract: This paper shows that the S/L interface is an area deviating from equilibrium in general solidification,and that the S/L interface of a solidification system in a nonequilibrium solidification process accompanied by mass,thermal and momentum transports is a noneqilibrium area with the special characteristic similar to those of other nonequilibrium systems. It also shows that the state of the S/L interface is a function of the state of molten metal, the crystal growth conditions and other thermodynamic and kinetic factors. And according to this investigation described above, a new approach to controlling the behaviours of the S/L interface as well as the solidification process of an alloy system can be put into practice satisfactorily.
