Abstract: In this paper the working condition and wear mechanism of the punch die were analysed and the suitability of several low temperature che mical heat treatment techniques for W6Mo5Cr4V2 steel punch dies was studied. The wear resistance of several nitrided layers was studied by using the impact wear test. The experiment results show that under impact loading, wear process of the die surface is adhesive wear, fatique peeling and abrasive wear. The brittle compound phases and sulphides in the surface will decrease the resistance. The nitrocarburized layer has better wear resistance. So the wear resistance and the service life of W6Mo5Cr4V2 punch dies by nitriocarburizing and salt bath sulphonitrocarburizing can be improved.
