Study on the Gran Titration for Measuring the Total Alkalinity Levels of Seawater Samples with Different Salinities and Its Influence Factors

Abstract: This paper introduces the definition of total alkalinity of seawater and its measurement principle and methods. Analysis on the total alkalinity of seawater samples was conducted with the total alkalinity analyzer using the Gran titration method. Whether systematic differences exist in the total alkalinity experiments is examined through t-test, with standard seawater with different salinities analyzed, so as to investigate the relationship between the salinity and total alkalinity. The results show that the measurement accuracy of the total alkalinity analyzer is approximately ±1 μmol/L, and there are no systematic differences in the experiments. Positive correlation exists between seawater salinity and total alkalinity, in other words, seawater total alkalinity rises with increasing salinity. Besides, China Series Standard Seawater is not suitable for being used as the reference material for measuring total alkalinity. Finally, this paper summarizes the influence factors existing in measuring the total alkalinity of seawater, such as the efficiency of the pH electrode, as well as temperature fluctuation during the reaction process.
