Abstract: The shroud and turbine are integrated into the generator in the rim-driven marine current power generation(RMCP) system in which the generator is directly driven by the turbine without any transmission component. The least start-up water speed is an important parameter for measuring the performance of the RMCP system. The start-up characteristics of the RMCP system mainly depend on the start torque of turbine, the friction torque and the generator cogging torque. This paper analyzes these factors, and focuses on the characteristics of the start torque of turbine and generator cogging torque through theoretical method and finite element simulation method. The prototype experimental values are used to validate the theoretical analysis results. The conclusion of this paper can provide theoretical guidance for the optimal design of the RMCP system.
