Study on the Hazard Grading, Spatial-Temporal Distribution and Changes of Dominant Causative Organisms for Alleviating Harmful Algae Blooms in Hebei Coastal Sea Areas, China

Abstract: In order to study the hazard grading, spatial-temporal distribution and variation characteristics of dominant causative organisms of harmful algae blooms(HABs) in the coastal areas of Hebei Province during 1989 to 2013, statistical analysis was carried out on the times, sites, scopes, areas and dominant causative species of58 algae blooms in total in Hebei coastal areas. The results show that among the small-scale(0-100 km2),medi um-scale(100-1 000 km2), large-scale(≥1 000 km2) and area-unknown HABs, small-scale HABs are multiple and account for 60.35 % of the cumulative number of occurrence in the whole Hebei coastal areas; in the peak period from May to August, the number of HAB occurrence accounts for 86.21 % of the total; and significant increase in the frequency of HABs was observed since 2000, reaching 4 times a year during 2000 to2013, compared with 1 time a year during 1989 to 2000. The Qinhuangdao coastal areas witness the maximum HAB occurrence, accounting for 57.14 % of the cumulative number of occurrence in the whole Hebei Province,followed by Cangzhou coastal areas, and with the minimum occurring in Tangshan coastal areas. The Qinhuangdao coastal areas have the largest area of HABs, accounting for 64.25 % of the cumulative areas of occurrence in the whole province, followed by Cangzhou and Tangshan coastal areas successively. There are 15 species of dominant harmful organisms in Hebei coastal areas, with Noctiluca scintillans, the main bloom-forming species before2009, causing the maximum number of HABs and accounting for 44.83 % of the cumulative number of occurrence in the whole province. Aureococcus anophagefferens is also a high bloom-forming species, resulting in the maximum areas of HABs and accounting for 55.57 % of the cumulative areas of occurrence in the whole province. After2009, Aureococcus anophagefferens and N. scintillans have become the dominant bloom-forming species together in the Hebei coastal areas.
