Analysis on the Characteristics of the Spatial and Temporal Variation of the Kuroshio Extension Front and the Distribution of the Sound Field

Abstract: Through the analysis on the seasonal mean data of WOA13 from 1955 to 2012, this paper uses the absolute gradient maximum connection method to obtain the spatial information of the Kuroshio Extension frontal axis off the east coast of Japan. The seasonal variations of the front axial temperature, salinity and strength are analyzed, and the sound field features in the frontal zone are preliminarily discussed using the BELLHOP model. It is concluded that the Kuroshio Extension frontal axis gradually moves southward with increasing depth, and the temperature and salinity vary significantly with the change of depths and seasons, with obvious mixed layer occurring from January to March when the underwater sound channel is remarkably affected by the sound source depth.
