Abstract: Geothermal probe is the specialized instrument for seafloor heat-flow investigation. This paper presents a design of new miniature boomerang-style geothermal probe. The design of the probe mechanical structure is in accordance with fluid mechanic simulative calculation and experimentation, and the probe technology is integrated with the peripheral technology such as low-power-consumption data acquisition, infrared underwater communication, satellite positioning and electrochemistry release. All the functional units ensure the probe to achieve the targets of expendable deployment, thermal conductivity in-situ measurement and boomerang-style retrieve. The development of the novel geothermal probe will equip seafloor heat-flow investigation with a more convenient means.
