Study on the Principle and Application of Calibrating the Wave Height and Period Measurements from the Gravitational Acceleration Wave Buoys in Laboratory

Abstract: The Gravitational Acceleration Wave Buoy currently serves as one of the primary devices applied for long-term fixed-point observation on ocean waves. Given the critical need for reliable wave information, it is essential to calibrate the wave buoys to ensure the measurement accuracy before deployment in real marine environment. Both the principle and application of calibrating the wave height and period measurements from a wave buoy are presented in this paper, and the calibrating procedure and results are illustrated with examples.The calibration device used in laboratory, with the clear principle of simulating the sinusoidal function of waves through driving the wave buoy rotating, is featured by concise structure, easy recovery and adjustment of wave characteristics, and a simulating way close to the theoretical requirements, thus is proven to have reliable and good metrology performance.
