Abstract: Under the influence of global warming, the tendency of sea level rise is being exacerbated across China’s coast. Sea level rise will pose great impact on the socio-economy, natural environment and ecosystem of coastal areas. In the face of the resulting threats, it is particularly important to prevent from the harms brought about by sea level rise. It is primarily necessary to master the rate of sea level rising, so tidemark data are important references for scientific research, with timeliness, accuracy and integrity always play a predominant role in the research on sea level. However, due to the incorrect methods used in observation, it is difficult to calculate the accurate average sea level. According to the theory and practical experience, this paper summarizes the factors influencing the quality of tidal observation, including the effects of benchmark elevation errors, tidal datum confirmed, and sinking and injecting diesel oil in the well. In practical work, researchers try to solve these difficulties to obtain accurate sea level and its rising rate, and provide a theoretical basis for disaster prevention and mitigation.
