Status of cigarette smoking and secondhand smoking exposure among junior high school students in Shunyi District of Beijing in 2015

Abstract: [Objective] To investigate the status of cigarette smoking and secondhand smoking exposure among junior high school students in Shunyi District of Beijing,provide a scientific basis for the effective implementation of youth tobacco control in the future.[Methods] Using cluster sampling method,1 404 students from 3 junior high schools in Shunyi District of Beijing were investigated with the Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) questionnaire.[Results] The rate of current smoking and attempting smoking among junior high school students was 4.0% and 16.2% respectively.In the previous 7 days,77.4% of students had seen someone smoking at home,indoor places,outdoor places and public transportation.The rate of exposure to secondhand smoking in descending order was outdoor places (65.2%),indoor places (58.8%),home (47.6%) and public transportation (21.2%).80.5% of students thought that secondhand smoking has definitely harming health,and the proportion of non-smokers (80.9%) was higher than that of smokers (69.6%).59.8% of students supported smoking ban in indoor and outdoor public places.[Conclusion] There are the phenomenon of current smoking and attempting smoking among junior high school students in Shunyi District of Beijing,while the secondhand smoking exposure is serious.It is urgent to strengthen tobacco control and use legal means to protect students from secondhand smoking.
