Exposure level of welding fumes and its influencing factors in workplaces of Pudong New District in Shanghai from 2014-2016

Abstract: [Objective] To investigate the exposure level of welding fumes in workplaces of Pudong New District in Shanghai from 2014-2016 and explore its influencing factors.[Methods] 197 welders from 114 enterprises in Pudong New District were recruited through three-stage sampling method.An occupational active surveillance for welding fumes was conducted,while personal sampling and gravimetric measurement were used to detect the concentration of welding fumes.The descriptive statistics was used to analyze the welding fume exposure level and its influencing factors.[Results] Totally 197 air samples were collected and the median (M),geometric mean (GM) and arithmetic mean (AM) of dust concentration were 1.75 (P25-P75,0.83-2.37) mg/m3,(1.72±3.18) mg/m3 and (1.65±3.71) mg/m3 respectively.The percentage of the samples exceeding occupational exposure limit (OEL) reached 21.82%.The exceeding standard rate of individual samples fluctuated slightly in the three years,which reached the peak in 2015 (28.77%),however,the difference was not statistically significant (x2=3.718,P>0.05).The exceeding standard rate of welding fumes in large sized factories(43.59%) was significantly higher than that in medium-small sized factories(x2=-14.583,P<0.01).The exceeding standard rate of welding fumes in shipbuilding industry was the highest (38.10%),followed by special equipment manufacturing industry (30.00%),and the difference was statistically significant (x2=11.930,P<0.01).The exceeding standard rate of workers with exposure length ≥4 hours (27.42%) was significantly higher than that of those with exposure length <4 hours (12.33%) (x2=6.132,P<0.01).The exceeding standard rate of continuous operation (32.22%) was higher than that of intermittent operation,and the difference was statistically significant (x2=10.493,P<0.01).The exceeding standard rate of welding fumes in operation environment with poor ventilation effect (43.24%) was obviously higher than that in environment with good ventilation (15.94%) and moderate ventilation (17.58%),and the difference was statistically significant (x2=12.307,P<0.01).[Conclusion] The exposure level of welding fumes in workplaces of Pudong New District is high,which might lead to increased health risks.The enterprise size,industry type,exposure length,operation characteristics and effectiveness of ventilation are the main the factors that impact the exposure level of welding fume.
