Motion Computation and Optimal Design of Wave Energy Converter “Sharp Eagle Ⅰ”in Frequency Domain

Abstract: Traditionally, the wave energy converter system is divided into two phases. Wave energy is captured and stored in the first phases called Primary Energy Converter Process; and stored energy is converted into electric energy in the second phases called Secondary Energy Converter Process. The Optimal Design of Primary ECP functions as a key technique and important means to improve the efficiency of wave energy converter(WEC). This paper firstly computes the wave-induced coupled motion of WEC and power take-off(PTO) in frequency domain, and then calculates the optimal PTO damping for different wave elements based on maximize energy capture efficiency. With attack wave width ratio as the scale, an optimal design is carried out for the first phase energy converter of the wave power device, thus obtaining the optimal damping. The optimal PTO damping will provide the design foundation with the project prototype graded control strategy. The real sea state test of Eagle Ⅰdemonstrated that it is feasible to improve the energy capture efficiency and broaden the bandwidth of WEC response frequency.
