Determination of Volatile Organic Compounds in Wood Furniture by Environmental Test Chamber-Auto Thermal Desorption-Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrum Method

Abstract: With the help of environmental test chamber(ETC),automatic thermal desorption(ATD)and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC/MS)technology,the volatile organic compounds(VOCs)in coating furniture and overlaying furniture were tested. Based on the analysis of of 25 groups of wood furniture samples,the authors concluded that the volatile organic compounds in the main wood furniture were composed mainly by low carbon molecule benzene,esters,ketones,terpenes and pinene contained in natural wood,in which the largest proportion was benzene. The quantitative analysis of the VOCs emitted by wood furniture was conducted,and the release of VOCs in the coating furniture was obviously higher than that of the overlaying furniture.
