Application of the Soil Plug Failure Model for Super Jack-up Rigs Penetrating in Complex Stratum

Abstract: Jack-up rigs are widely applied in offshore oil exploration. Punch-through safety analysis is the focus of jack-up rigs for penetration analysis. With increasing sizes of jack-up rigs’ construction, the failure model of spudcan acting on foundation soils is changed. A new failure model, namely the soil plug failure model, often occurs during the preloading of large diameter spudcan. In this paper, the mechanisms of routine failure model and soil plug failure model are analyzed in complex stratum, and the basic formulas for calculating the depth of leg penetration are introduced for the soil plug failure model. Through many engineering practices and actual cases, it is shown that the soil plug failure model can accurately predict the depth of leg penetration for super jack-up rigs preload in complex stratum. It can provide more reliable data and safety analysis for jack-up operators.
