Study on the Self-Burial Effect of Spoiler on Submarine Pipelines Under Ocean Currents

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to study the effect of different spoilers on the self-burial of submarine pipelines under ocean currents. The parameters of the spoiler, including height, installation clearance, flow velocity and installation angle, are studied through parameter analysis methods. Through the Fluent software, the sinking speed of the pipeline is defined through a User Defined Functions(UDF), which simulates the dynamic process of the pipeline self-burial. The study finds that the maximum shear force on the bed increases with rising height of the spoiler. When comparing the calculation results of different heights of the spoilers, the best results are obtained in the range of D/8 to D/4. The flow rate must reach 1.2 m/s or more to meet self-burial requirements. In the 0° installation position, the downward lift from the pipe is maximized. With the increasing of the gap, the maximum shear force on the bed surface shows a decreasing trend as a whole.
