Study on the Influence of Installation Depth on the Hydrodynamic Performance of Horizontal Axial Tidal Turbine under Wave Effects

Abstract: In the marine environment, environmental factors such as waves will make the turbine bear non-uniform loads, resulting in turbine’s fatigue damage. It is necessary to properly arrange the turbine position to obtain higher energy efficiency, while ensuring a larger fatigue life. So the influence of the installation depth of the turbine under wave-current combined action is studied using the computational fluid dynamics software Fluent, and the feasibility of the VOF wave-making method is verified using the flume test. The results show that under the action of the waves,the force and torque of the turbine are periodically fluctuating, and the periodic fluctuation caused by the wave gradually decreases with the increase of the installation depth of the turbine. In addition, the average value of the axial force coefficient and the power coefficient of the turbine gradually increases with increasing installation depth of the turbine. The study of hydrodynamic performances of the turbine under different installation depths can provide some reference for turbine load analysis, blade manufacturing and selection of installation location.
