Correlation Analysis Between Smoking Quantity and the Prevalence of Hypertension of Residents in Huai’an City Using Life Table Method

Abstract: Objective To evaluate the relationship between smoking quantity and the prevalence of hypertension of residents in Huai’an City. Methods A multi-stage stratified cluster sampling method was used to conduct a face-to-face household questionnaire survey by uniformly trained investigators using the Huai’an Chronic Diseases and Risk Factors Questionnaire. Results The prevalence rate of hypertension among residents was 18.6%,and the prevalence rates of hypertension among male and female residents were 28.7% and 27.9% respectively; the smoking rates among residents was 18.9%, and the smoking rates among male and female residents were 37.8% and 1.7% respectively. Non-smokers had the lowest prevalence of hypertension in the population, and the prevalence rate of hypertension was highest among the residents with smoking amount between 1 and 10. Life table analysis showed that strong relationship between smoking and prevalence probability of hypertension. Conclusion There was a correlation between smoking and the prevalence of hypertension among residents.
