Abstract: Objective To investigate the visual acuity and refractive state of preschool children in Caolu Town of Pudong New Area in Shanghai, and to prevent the preschool children from abnormal vision and control the refractive error. Methods With the informed consent of parents, naked-eye vision and refractive screening were carried out on registered preschool children in Caolu. Results A total of 1,606 preschool children were examined in the study. The detection rate of abnormal eyesight was 6.91%. The difference among different age groups was statistically significant(χ~2=18.508, P<0.05), and detection rate increased with increasing age(χ~2 lineartrend=12.912, P<0.05). The number of abnormal refractive eye accounted for 26.87% of the number of examination eyes, mainly astigmatism. The prevalence of ametropia in preschool children in public kindergartens(28.26%) was higher than that in private kindergartens(χ~2 lineartrend=10.258, P<0.05). Conclusion The status of abnormal eyesight and ametropia in Caolu are not optimistic. It will be imperative to strengthen the education of eye care, visual inspection, and ametropia screening, and establish and constantly improve the community-based primary eye care system for preschool children.
