Abstract: Ocean observation buoys are widely used across the globe. The balance of the ocean buoy body is one of the important factors affecting the performance of the buoy system(except for measuring the hydrological parameters such as waves). Taking a small buoy with a main body diameter of 2.3 m as example, this paper deduces and calculates the position of the center of gravity and buoyancy of the buoy by using the theory of mechanical balance and mathematical analysis method. The center of gravity is located on the central axis of the main buoy and is downward from the center of the buoy. When the buoy tilts certain degrees, the buoy’s center of gravity can be calculated. The coordinates and the stable position of the center are obtained. It is also calculated that the buoy is still in a steady state equilibrium when its inclination is 20 degrees. The theoretical results show that the design is feasible. The correctness of theoretical calculation and analysis is verified by actual test at sea,and the buoy is still in a stable equilibrium state when its inclination is serious. In this paper, theoretical analysis and experimental verification are used to study the balance of buoys. The analysis and calculation method in this paper is universal and suitable for the balance analysis of other types of buoys, even all surface buoys, and it is expected to provide reference for the design of floating bodies on water surface.
